Buyer Reviews

This was one particular of the funnier 'electronics' items I ever got and... I like it but anybody taking into consideration it should certainly be conscious that this case does not travel effectively - see below.
The most exciting function about the case is the style, so to speak. If you can picture your HDD inside a box of Altoids Curiously Sturdy Mints and you do not thoughts it being there then this case is for you. There are no screws or hinges or locks and none are essential for as extended as your case doesn't move much. What you get is a small tin box where you press the leading component on just after you actually squeeze in your two.five SATA drive and it sort of clicks in and it stays that way given that it really is not simple to reopen it.
This is great style - how come no one else believed of it? - and I applaud it but, like I stated, I would not carry this case in my shirt pocket or even in my laptop bag. Murphy's law becoming what it is, the lid just could possibly pop open and the HDD might possibly come out and, in the process, perhaps damage the case own USB interface or, worse, its personal connectors, making itself useless. Then again, as a stationary external HDD solution, it really is tops on the price/efficiency curve.
- INSTALLATION - With out exaggeration, it took less than two minutes, most of the time spent to really open the empty box simply because it comes closed. Need to be cautious with these connectors but that's all. Once you snap in the lid, your drive is encased and prepared to use. On a Vista and on a Windows 7 computer it was recognized inside seconds.
- CONTENTS - Other than the tin/aluminum case, you get a tiny USB cable to connect to your computer system [mine was junk - see my note beneath]. It really is split for two 'A' (wider connectors), just in case your HDD desires to draw power from 2 USB ports but my 500GB, 2.5" SATA is content with just one. You should make certain that your HDD is connected to a 'powered' USB port - some USB port splitters/hubs do not power all or some of their ports. There is also a postage-sized manual that discusses setup beneath Windows 98 or Windows 2000 and when it's secure to disconnect the drive - the English is a strong B+. I do not believe I discovered any warranty promises but warranties on items this low-cost are silly to begin with. There is also some low-priced neoprene-like pouch, presumably to be put to use even though traveling. It really is essentially a superior point to have, IF you insist on taking your encased disc on the road since it improves the odds of keeping the whole thing together - keep in mind, there are no screws.
- PERFORMACE - For a stationary drive, it totally meets my expectation. The interface is USB two. so you should really count on way more than 100MB/s when it comes to data rates. The aluminum/tin case, getting metal, is pretty decent at dissipating heat and the disc appears to be running pretty cool inside.
I am pretty happy with this inexpensive case and I will look at having far more if I finish up with far more loose two.5" SATAs (it happens when you upgrade or your old laptop turns obsolete) and choose to use them as stationary external HDDs or merely to retailer the discs and place them away for information archiving although keeping hassle-free access to the information by way of the USB port.

Note:
Following posting the review above where the case was used with one particular of my personal USB cable, I in reality used the supplied 'free' USB wire and, to my surprise, the disc was either not recognized, I was becoming prompted to format the perfectly good disc or, from time to time, it WAS recognized. On occasions, the LED would blink red indicating that the the disc was 'writing' something (scary) and it would not cease unless I turned off the laptop or computer.
To make the story short, IF you are having difficulty connecting the disc to your personal computer with the supplied USB wire, the 1st factor you should certainly do is try a further USB cable. I hope that most of the USB cables shipped are beneficial but... you never now. I am taking a star away for the scare I got - asking me to 'format' a perfectly good drive.

This Sata drive is terrific. I love the reality that it can effortlessly pop open and get your SATA drive in there
quickly. No screws are required. Easy to check out a negative SATA drive, with out essential a screwdriver. A++
