This is an affordable, basic IDE-to-USB 2. tricky drive enclosure I purchased it because I necessary to recover substantial amounts of data (extra than my USB stick would deal with) from the fixed disk in an old, non-working Computer to a new machine. It does the job but it is not the most user-friendly item to perform with.
The style is fairly good- sleek and black - and it does consist of all the expected cables (energy and USB). Where it's a small clunky is in the actual setup. The leading, bottom and sides are simply a shell, and the front and back panels pop off by implies of two plastic pins that snap into holes on the sides.
This is the slightly inconvenient bit, as you have to have some thing to push into the holes, like a pen or stylus, to pop the pins out. The IDE interface, the four-pin-to-PS/two energy connector , and the USB interface are all attached to this back panel.
Included in the box were two compact, flat black rectangles with two nubs on them. Considering that the case itself does not come with any docs, it took a minute to figure out these had been intended to serve as drive rails, fitting into the front two screw holes on the drive sides and sliding along notches inside the case.
Two other downsides: 1, it's not hot-swappable - it would be several minutes' operate to unhook one drive and put a different a single in - and two, when I did re-open the case to swap drives, possessing left it on and the very first 1 running for about three hours, I found it pretty hot, the case possessing no ventilation at all. I have quite a few old IDE drives. Rather than pay for an external backup drive I decided to try an enclosure so I could use some of my old HDDs. I looked at a number of and based on the evaluations and price tag of this item I decided to try it.
It is really fundamental and does not have any documentation. To open the box you have a one thing to press in a smaller plastic lock pin but it is straightforward to open. There are two plastic rectangles and an extra front and back cover. I did not know what the rectangles were for so I did not use them. I now see in yet another evaluation that you can place the plastic rectangles in the HDD screw holes to make rails. It worked fine for me with no the rails.
It was quite straightforward to connect the drive and close the case. I connected to a Windows 7 system with the USB cable and was in a position to use the HDD quickly. I applied it for two weeks without having any difficulty so I just ordered 3 additional.
There are two minor issues for me. These are particularly minor compared to the cost but they are the cause for a 4 star rating instead of a five star rating..
1. There is no stand. You have to lay the drive down. You can't stand it on its edge. Unless you place it on some thing there is no air flow beneath the drive.
two. There is rather small ventilation so heat could possibly be a predicament. I took the case and drilled a few modest holes to give better cooling.
