Buyer Testimonials

Tried this device a Friend of mine had when I had a hard drive get corrupted in the boot sector. It worked so properly that I ordered mine own. Did a challenging drive replacement on my MAC Book Pro working with this unit and it was simple and no complications. If you operate with your hardware or swap tough drives then this is a Should HAVE. Functions on 2.five, three.five five.25 inch tricky drives as well as CD and DVD five.25 inch drives. SATA and IDE and PATA drives all work.

I use devices like this in my perform. I was attracted by the low cost of this unit, about 1-third of other equivalent items. Cost-effective enough to give it a attempt.
The unit is cheaply packaged in a poly bag, but everything you have for connecting to an IDE or SATA drive is included. There's an AC adapter that terminates in a normal 12vdc plug for IDE drives and a pigtail SATA energy adapter. The key unit, the piece that contains the interface electronics, looks the exact same as extra pricey units and has connectors on either side for three.5" and two.five" IDE drives. There is a information cable for SATA drives. A single end plugs into the drive, the other into a molded outlet on the electronics portion.
The USB cable connecting the interface to the pc is a tiny short compared to competitor's units that I have, but that is not honestly large deal.
There is a mini-CD with a bunch of drivers and some documentation. Any person working with Windows 2000 or later will not have the drivers. I've tried it a Knoppix Linux distribution and it worked fine. Can not speak for use on a Mac, but the manufacturer says it is compatible.
So why only 3 stars?
There's no drive activity LED! When you happen to be operating with a item like this, you totally want a visual indication that information is becoming read or written. Numerous applications don't offer a progress indicator and even these that do are not necessarily correct. In other words, you can wind up in a circumstance where you have to know if everything is working - and with this product, there is no evidence of drive activity!
Now that is negative. But here's the curious portion: the tiny bit of documentation that is included on the CD says that there should really be an activity LED. I intend on writing the distributor I purchased this from for clarification. If I just goa bum unit without a operating LED, I'll amend my evaluation to reflect that this unit at its current value is a real bargain. Otherwise, it is barely adequate, regardless of the price tag.
UPDATE: 11/01/09 The vendor of this item has been super-terrific to perform with. They sent a replacement unit rapidly and without having question. Sadly, the replacement didn't have an information activity LED either. I tried working with these a couple of occasions and devoid of that lED, they simply are not appropriate for severe use. Yes, they do operate as they will need to for transferring information - but if you can't physically observe drive activity, you do not know what is going on. Too negative, for the reason that these are priced a lot lower than other units that do have the LED.
