Client Testimonials

I purchased the 1tb Elements (WDBAAU0010HBK-NESN) for use with a Dish DVR 622.
Installation was was genuinely "plug and play". I merely took it out of the box, plugged it in, and it was immediately recognized by the DVR. I have considering that transferred about 200gb of content to/from it, and have watched content directly from the drive. So far, it is working perfectly. It automatically spins down right after a handful of minutes of non-use, as well as when the DVR is powered off. It also spins back up automatically (much less than ten seconds) when the DVR accesses it.
A single issue some people today might possibly not like: The case is developed to sit flat (as pictured), not on its side. There are 4 tiny non-skid pads on the bottom corners, but none on either side. There is no indication on the box, in the documentation, or on Western Digital's web site as to no matter whether the drive will work adequately on edge. As a general rule, WD drives are created to operate sideways or even upside down (any X,Y,Z orientation), so this a single probably will as well -- but you will will need to deliver your own non-skid pads.
Various related Western Digital drives, such as the late model "My Book" series, now contain a firmware-based CD-partition that is troublesome to get rid of, and can result in compatibility issues with some devices. That partition consists of backup software and utilities that are of questionable worth in any case, and of certainly no value when applying the drive with a non-laptop or computer device (like the Dish DVR). The Components -- at least at time of this evaluation -- doesn't include things like any of that junk. (Note: WD does have a downloadable utility to take away the partition from the other drives, but if you do not want that junk then save yourself the time/trouble and just order the Components drive.)

I perform for Computing assistance at Arizona State University, and I have adequate technical understanding to be certified as a TECH JUNKIE :)
I am a photographer too, so I have tons of Photographs (about 160GB), Videos, Software, Movies and Documentaries. I was looking for a uncomplicated external tricky drive without any backup software included, I am smart enough to do manual incremental backups with file tree structure intact (I use GOODSYNC to backup, its very basic and painless to use, for not so TECH savvy many people attempt SYNCTOY by Microsoft).
I have looked at several a large number of external HDDs and narrowed down to two models "Samsung Story 1TB - rather fine one too" and this 1 (I wanted it to be low cost as well - got this for $85. I did not go with other WD models given that of their annoying Backup Computer software.
Coming to the WD Elements 1TB: Its considerably smaller sized than I expected. It is dead silent, I had to touch it to convince myself that it was running, when I initially turned it on. Its not too heavy either. The indicator light is placed at the rear, which is a incredibly excellent factor (I acquire these LED's annoying, specially at night).
After I did the 1st setup, I copied 383GB of information (931GB was total space). It took about 4hr 47min, speed varied among 20MBps to 37MBps. This is pretty great speed for USB two.. It was just a bit warm (my old segate tricky drive would be incredibly pretty hot for this amount of data transfer).
I would advise it to newbies or pros alike. I am very happy with this obtain!
UPDATE:
Soon after about three months of heavy usage, it in no way gave up on me. Its nonetheless dead silent and works flawlessly. It in no way got even warm
UPDATE: 07-28-2010
I sold my WD Components 1TB and got a 2TB 1 a couple of months ago(as my information is on rise all the time, I am a data guzzler), could not be happier :)
UPDATE 04-04-2012
Till at present the drives function like a charm, I purchased a different 2TB drive a year ago (now I have 2TB x two = 4TB)
They each work superb
