Client Testimonials

I purchased the 1tb Components (WDBAAU0010HBK-NESN) for use with a Dish DVR 622.
Installation was was genuinely "plug and play". I simply took it out of the box, plugged it in, and it was right away recognized by the DVR. I have because transferred about 200gb of content material to/from it, and have watched content straight from the drive. So far, it is operating perfectly. It automatically spins down immediately after a handful of minutes of non-use, as nicely as when the DVR is powered off. It also spins back up automatically (much less than 10 seconds) when the DVR accesses it.
One factor some people may possibly not like: The case is created to sit flat (as pictured), not on its side. There are 4 modest non-skid pads on the bottom corners, but none on either side. There is no indication on the box, in the documentation, or on Western Digital's internet site as to no matter if the drive will perform adequately on edge. As a general rule, WD drives are created to operate sideways or even upside down (any X,Y,Z orientation), so this one likely will as well -- but you are going to need to deliver your personal non-skid pads.
Several comparable Western Digital drives, such as the late model "My Book" series, now contain a firmware-based CD-partition that is complicated to eliminate, and can cause compatibility concerns with some devices. That partition contains backup computer software and utilities that are of questionable value in any case, and of certainly no value when making use of the drive with a non-laptop or computer device (like the Dish DVR). The Components -- at least at time of this evaluation -- does not include things like any of that junk. (Note: WD does have a downloadable utility to take away the partition from the other drives, but if you don't want that junk then save yourself the time/trouble and just get the Components drive.)

I function for Computing help at Arizona State University, and I have adequate technical understanding to be certified as a TECH JUNKIE :)
I am a photographer as well, so I have tons of Pictures (about 160GB), Videos, Computer software, Movies and Documentaries. I was looking for a basic external hard drive devoid of any backup software program included, I am intelligent sufficient to do manual incremental backups with file tree structure intact (I use GOODSYNC to backup, its particularly easy and hassle-free to use, for not so TECH savvy folks try SYNCTOY by Microsoft).
I have looked at a number of countless external HDDs and narrowed down to two models "Samsung Story 1TB - especially superior one too" and this 1 (I wanted it to be cost-effective too - got this for $85. I did not go with other WD models since of their annoying Backup Software program.
Coming to the WD Components 1TB: Its much smaller than I expected. It is dead silent, I had to touch it to convince myself that it was running, when I initially turned it on. Its not too heavy either. The indicator light is placed at the rear, which is a especially good factor (I uncover these LED's annoying, specially at night).
After I did the first setup, I copied 383GB of information (931GB was total space). It took about 4hr 47min, speed varied between 20MBps to 37MBps. This is fairly really good speed for USB two.. It was just a bit warm (my old segate hard drive would be quite pretty hot for this quantity of data transfer).
I would recommend it to newbies or pros alike. I am rather happy with this obtain!
UPDATE:
Soon after about three months of heavy usage, it under no circumstances gave up on me. Its still dead silent and operates flawlessly. It under no circumstances got even warm
UPDATE: 07-28-2010
I sold my WD Elements 1TB and got a 2TB one particular a couple of months ago(as my data is on rise all the time, I'm a information guzzler), couldn't be happier :)
UPDATE 04-04-2012
Till right now the drives perform like a charm, I purchased one other 2TB drive a year ago (now I have 2TB x 2 = 4TB)
They each perform superb
